“Greyson was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) in August 2017. It was probably the most devastating and hardest day of our lives. Just over two years ago, we were given the news that our innocent 14 month old son had cancer. To hear your own child has this disease was mind-numbing. I can recall every minute of that dreadful day – the waiting of test results at our local hospital ER, being transferred to Luries via ambulance to run more tests, sitting in the ER room for 9 hours to finally be told the news of Greyson's illness. 3 days later, we were given the exact diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Our lives were forever changed from that moment forward.
Fast Forward to today – 5 long rounds of very intense inpatient chemo, news of relapse shortly after chemo ended, several spinal chemo injections, more chemo (3 additional rounds), endless amounts of meds, 2 weeks of cranial and spine radiation, followed by his stem cell transplant, which was an incredibly scary and difficult time. While he was dealt a bad hand and endured so much, we can certainly look back and still have so much to be thankful for.
I remember the first week of our many hospitals stays sitting in our room and, in walked a couple of women wearing yellow shirts handing me a pillow. At the time, I thought, that's nice of them and I suppose I can use a comfy pillow during the long hospitals stays. Cal's Angels turned out to be more than just that. They have always been around during our frequent and lengthy stays at Luries, whether just to stop and say hello, to bring the floor lunch, handout toys, or have an ice cream party. To be so isolated in your room and wishing you'd be anywhere but a hospital room, they put every effort to try and make it as comfortable and enjoyable for not only our warriors, but for the parents and siblings.
Outside the hospital, I remember our kids' faces light up when they saw Cal's Angels took the time to come out during Christmas time to decorate our house with lights. In the fall of 2018, Cal's Angels honored Greyson during a high school football game, while the whole school rallied behind us to raise awareness and funds for pediatric cancer. Everyday, we are grateful for Greyson's current health. This journey we continue on is not an easy one, however the love and support from so many incredible people in our lives is immeasurable.”
