Michael was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma in 2014 when he was 9 months old. By the time of diagnosis, the cancer had spread through his bones from head to toe, bone marrow and he had a large abdominal tumor which was also intertwined through his spine. Michael completed 8 rounds of chemotherapy and all the cancer disappeared! He was considered NED “no evidence of disease” for almost 4 years before relapsing in December of 2018. The cancer returned with a vengeance. He had tumors through his chest compressing on his airway, as well as various lymph nodes, tumors in his abdomen, and heavy bone marrow involvement. Michael completed 6 rounds of high dose chemotherapy, had resection surgery, did 12 rounds of proton radiation and is currently doing immunotherapy at Sloan Kettering in NYC.
Michael has a small amount of residual soft tissue tumor in his spine, which is being monitored closely. After completing immunotherapy, he will begin a 1 or 2 year clinical trial to hopefully achieve remission. Michael is a happy 5 year old and attends kindergarten, despite missing one week/month for treatment in NYC. He loves playing outside, laughing and telling jokes, and taking care of his little twin sisters. Neuroblastoma has a high rate of relapse so Michael prays to ask God to take away his cancer forever so that he can grow up healthy and strong. He has high frequency hearing loss from chemo and is monitored for other long term side effects that may not develop for years.
